Bioacoustics Equipment & Training (BEAT) Program for Indonesia & Malaysia
The K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics (in partnership with Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu) is currently in our second year of our Bioacoustics Equipment and Training Program (BEAT) for Indonesia and Malaysia. This program is designed to support local research teams with training, mentoring, and equipment to establish conservation-oriented acoustic monitoring projects in Indonesia or Malaysia. In our inaugural year of the program, we supported 8 teams (6 in Indonesia and 2 in Malaysia) and our second-year cohort comprises 9 teams (6 in Indonesia and 3 in Malaysia). I have served as a co-founder, -organizer, and -mentor for the program and encourage you to please reach out to me about your interest and questions!
Bioacoustics education & outreach for local kids in Borneo
With support from the Conservation Food & Health Foundation, and in partnership with Universitas Muhammadiyah Palangkaraya and the Borneo Nature Foundation, we are leading efforts to share the wonderful world of bioacoustics research with local communities. Bioacoustics has exciting potential to engage children in biodiversity research and conservation and presents a practical approach to learning about species that are difficult to see in dense forest habitats. I started developing bioacoustics curriculum for local high schools in 2019 and in 2023, we organized our first field trip to the Mungku Baru Education Forest for 15 local high school students. We have lots more on the horizon for 2024, so follow our News page for updates!
